President Trump announced a pending $140 billion arms sale to Taiwan and expressed a desire to discuss it with Taiwan’s leader. President Lai Ching‑te said that if given the chance to speak with President Trump, he would stress that strengthening Taiwan’s defence and the US arms purchase are vital for Taiwan’s security and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, and he hopes the deal continues. He also warned that China’s expanding military activities in the East and South China Seas destabilise the region, and noted Taiwan’s increased defence budget to ensure peace through strength. Lai reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign, independent nation and that democratic freedom should be protected.
