OKLAHOMA CITY (Associated Press) – The league's Most Valuable Player lived up to his title today. In Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, defeated the San Antonio Spurs 122-113, tying the series at 1-1.
According to the Associated Press, Gilgeous-Alexander, a two-time MVP, rebounded from a subpar performance in Game 1, scoring 30 points with 9 assists. Chet Holmgren added 13 points.
The Thunder's bench heavily outplayed the Spurs', with a total scoring advantage of 57-25. Alex Caruso contributed 17 points, while Jared McCain and Cason Wallace each scored 12. The team also capitalized on opponent miscues, holding a 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
For the Spurs, Stephon Castle scored 25 points, Devin Vassell contributed 22, and Victor Wembanyama delivered a spectacular all-around performance with 21 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks.
Game 3 of the series will be played in San Antonio on the 22nd.
'The whole team gave it their all tonight,' Gilgeous-Alexander said in a post-game interview. 'We all knew what was at stake if we lost this game, and we were locked in from the start.'
Isaiah Hartenstein, who was mostly benched in Game 1, contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Thunder today.
With this victory, the Thunder improved their record to 14-5 this season in games following a loss. However, this was only their second win in seven matchups against the Spurs.
The Thunder's victory came at a cost. Guard Jalen Williams, who had already missed six playoff games with a strained left hamstring, re-aggravated the injury in the first half and left the game. The Thunder described it as muscle tightness, but his availability for the game on the 22nd remains uncertain.
The Spurs also suffered losses. Star guard De'Aaron Fox was already out with an ankle issue. His replacement in the starting lineup, Dylan Harper, exited in the third quarter with a right leg injury after a series of awkward landings.
The Spurs, who trailed by 11 at halftime and 8 entering the fourth quarter, nearly mounted a comeback. A corner three-pointer by Harrison Barnes cut the deficit to 97-99 with 9:06 remaining.
However, the defending champion Thunder stabilized over the next two and a half minutes, launching an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 13 points, which included a banked-in three-pointer by McCain.
But the Spurs did not surrender. A basket in the paint by Wembanyama narrowed the score to 113-118 with 1:25 left. Gilgeous-Alexander then scored the final basket to seal the victory. With the series now tied, it will head to the Spurs' home court for the next games.
