Guizhou Man's 'Moving Castle'-Style 10-Story Home Demolished by Authorities

A man in Guizhou, China, spent years transforming his ancestral home into a 10-story, fantastical structure resembling the 'Moving Castle' from Hayao Miyazaki's anime. However, authorities deemed the building a violation of demolition orders and building regulations, and recently forcibly demolished everything above the ground floor. According to AFP and The Guardian, the pyramid-shaped building had repeatedly violated demolition orders and was a popular local tourist attraction. Chen Tianming spent nearly eight years and 200,000 RMB converting the stone bungalow into the bizarre structure. The local government stated the building lacked proper permits and posed safety risks, taking three hours on the 20th to demolish the upper levels. Chen said, 'I don't feel it's a pity because it's useless,' but he is seeking legal assistance to challenge the demolition. Since a 2018 development plan, Chen had refused to leave and continued to build upwards.
