Central News Agency, Penghu, May 24. The Penghu County Animal Disease Control Center held a stray animal adoption event in Magong City today. Mayor Huang Jian-zhong served as an animal protection ambassador, calling for adoption and source management. Chen Gao-liang, Director of the Penghu Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau, stated that the county government has been allocating funds for spay/neuter subsidies and promoting responsible pet ownership to gradually reduce the number of stray dogs and cats. Mayor Huang emphasized that the stray animal issue is closely linked to daily life, affecting community environment, public safety, and owner responsibility. He noted that relying solely on shelters is not a long-term solution. Wu Jing-zhi, Director of the Animal Disease Control Center, reported that as of May 21, the Wukan Stray Animal Shelter housed 313 dogs, 10 cats, and 2 rabbits, nearing full capacity. The center requires all adopted animals to be spayed or neutered to prevent further breeding. The event also promoted microchipping and responsible ownership to raise public awareness.
