Central News Agency, Tehran, May 25. Iran's Foreign Ministry stated today that Tehran is charging 'navigation service' fees for vessels passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, rather than transit tolls. According to AFP, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated at a weekly press conference that the services provided, including navigation and environmental protection measures for the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman, require fees. Baqaei emphasized that Iran will continue to manage maritime traffic through these service fees but insisted this does not equate to Tehran 'attempting to collect tolls.' According to Euronews, Iran released a map last week claiming regulatory rights over parts of the Strait of Hormuz, extending into the territorial waters of the UAE and Oman. In response, five Persian Gulf states issued a formal warning through the International Maritime Organization (IMO), urging shipping companies not to comply with Iran's demands.
