Orange County Chemical Tank Crisis: Crack Found, Pressure Relief Aids Situation

Authorities in Orange County, California, stated on the 24th that a crack has been discovered in a leaking chemical storage tank, which may help release internal pressure and is a step in the right direction. The leak occurred in Garden Grove, southeast of Los Angeles, leading to the evacuation of approximately 40,000 residents. Fire officials had warned of a potential catastrophic explosion due to rising temperatures in the tank and have been spraying water to cool it down. The tank contains 7,000 gallons (approx. 26,000 liters) of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a volatile and flammable liquid used in plastic manufacturing. The EPA warned that the gas can cause respiratory and neurological issues. Authorities are also working to prevent the leaked material from entering waterways.
