New Taipei Police Launch 'Thunder Sweep' Project, 29 Drug-Driving Cases Caught on First Day

The New Taipei City Police Department announced on the 25th that, in response to a fatal drug-impaired driving accident in Zhonghe on the 23rd, they launched a 'Thunder Sweep' project in coordination with central authorities. On the first day, 29 cases of drug-impaired driving were detected, with the Sanchong and Xinzhuang precincts reporting the highest numbers at five cases each. The police department stated that they are following the National Police Agency's nationwide campaign to combat drug-impaired driving and 'zombie vape' (etomidate) products. The initial three-day sweep focuses on high-risk times and locations with intensive inspections. Starting May 27, a three-week enforcement period will target the supply chain of illicit substances, including etomidate. From June 18 through the end of August, road safety measures will be integrated with summer youth protection programs to maintain strict enforcement.
