Tainan hits 39.5°C; potential typhoon 'Jangmi' could form by the 27th

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that the highest temperature today was 39.5°C in Nanhua District, Tainan. The heat will continue across Taiwan tomorrow. On the 29th, a front will affect the island, bringing rain to all regions, with potential heavy rain in the north and Yilan. The quasi-typhoon 'Jangmi' is expected to form as early as tomorrow, but is not forecast to have a direct impact on Taiwan. According to the CWA website, temperatures were high across the country today, with Nanhua District in Tainan reaching 39.5°C, followed by Xindian District in New Taipei City and Yujing District in Tainan at 39.2°C, and Neihu District in Taipei at 38.8°C. Outside of Taipei, Keelung, Pingtung, and Hualien also saw temperatures above 38°C. In Yujing District, Tainan, temperatures have exceeded 38°C for six consecutive days since the 21st, with readings over 39°C on the 22nd, 24th, 25th, and today. CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng explained that areas like Yujing and Nanhua in Tainan are prone to high temperatures around noon due to terrain factors that hinder sea breeze cooling. Tomorrow, Tainan should remain alert for temperatures above 39°C. Additionally, parts of Greater Taipei, the Huadong Valley, and inland central and southern Taiwan may see temperatures of 37°C or higher, with Taitung warned of potential foehn winds. On the 29th, a front will bring scattered showers or thunderstorms to central and northern regions, with heavy rain possible in the north and Yilan. On the 30th and 31st, the front will gradually move away, with scattered showers in the Huadong region and mostly cloudy to sunny conditions elsewhere. The tropical depression east of the Philippines is expected to strengthen into Typhoon 'Jangmi' as early as tomorrow, moving toward the Ryukyu Islands. While the latest models show the path shifting west closer to Taiwan, no direct impact is expected. On June 1st and 2nd, moisture from the typhoon's outer bands may bring scattered showers to the north and northeast. The CWA reminds residents that Matsu and Kinmen may experience low clouds or fog tomorrow and the 28th, affecting visibility, and long waves are expected along the northern coast of Keelung, the east coast, and the Hengchun Peninsula on the 31st.
