Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che convened a security meeting on the afternoon of the 26th, specifically ordering the Tainan City Police Department to strengthen patrols and enforcement against drug-impaired driving. According to police statistics, 621 cases of drug-impaired driving were detected between January 1 and May 22 this year. The police will continue to trace the sources of these drugs and conduct comprehensive sweeps. In a press release, the Tainan City Police Department stated that Mayor Huang noted the recent series of fatal accidents caused by drug-impaired driving, which have drawn significant public concern. He ordered the police to strengthen inspections, patrols, and stops in high-risk areas and during peak times. Mayor Huang also demanded continued crackdowns on high-risk substances such as methamphetamine, heroin, ketamine, and etomidate, while tracing their sources. He called for strict investigations into dealers, manufacturing plants, packaging facilities, cross-border smuggling, and gang-related drug hubs to dismantle distribution networks and prevent drug-impaired driving at the source. Additionally, the police will increase monitoring and warnings for individuals on the drug registry. Statistics show that from January 1 to May 22, the Tainan police detected 621 drug-impaired driving cases, 233 cases involving etomidate (236 people), and 9 mixed-drug packaging facilities. The department remains committed to a 'zero tolerance' policy toward drug-impaired driving to protect public safety and traffic order.
