Changhua prosecutors and police join forces to combat drug-impaired driving with new rapid testing

In response to frequent drug-impaired driving incidents, the Taiwan Changhua District Prosecutors Office and the Changhua County Police Bureau held a joint press conference today to announce multiple measures to combat such crimes. The County Police Bureau stated that it has purchased 2,400 saliva rapid test kits and 13,100 drug substance screening kits to be used during roadside inspections. The bureau noted that these kits are now part of standard equipment for officers. Any driver testing positive or refusing the test while showing signs of impairment will be arrested as a flagrant offender. The Changhua District Prosecutors Office stated that all drug-impaired driving cases will be handled strictly and swiftly. In addition to investigations under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and the Criminal Code, prosecutors will seek 'preventive detention' from the court where applicable. If a defendant is found to have driven despite knowing the risks, they may be prosecuted for serious crimes, with prosecutors requesting heavy sentencing.
