Spot Work Job Postings Increase by 20% Year-on-Year, Spreading to Regional Areas and Expanding Job Categories
The average hourly wage for spot work in the three major metropolitan areas for February-April 2026 was \1,233, a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year (\1,176 in the same period last year). The trend of "year-on-year change in average hourly wage" shows an acceleration of 0.3 percentage points from +4.6% in the previous quarter (November 2025-January 2026), indicating an upward trend. This suggests that in addition to the increase in minimum wages, demand for spot work from companies is growing amid a labor shortage.
Looking at job types, significant wage increases were observed in the three major metropolitan areas for "General Office Clerks" (up 10.0% year-on-year, average hourly wage \1,341) and "Personal Care and Hygiene Services" (up 7.0% year-on-year, average hourly wage \1,389). In regional areas (outside the three major metropolitan areas), wages also increased for "Personal Care and Hygiene Services" (up 10.9% year-on-year, average hourly wage \1,506) and "General Office Clerks" (up 7.8% year-on-year, average hourly wage \1,139). Wage increases are being seen broadly, regardless of region or job type.
The number of spot work job postings nationwide reached 3.956 million in this period, a 20.1% increase year-on-year. While the market continues to expand, changes are emerging in the growth speed by region. Job postings in the three major metropolitan areas were 2.427 million, a 16.8% increase year-on-year, while those outside the three major metropolitan areas (regional areas) were 1.529 million, a 25.7% increase year-on-year. The growth rate in regional areas has been exceeding that of the three major metropolitan areas recently. The total cumulative working hours nationwide, which indicates the actual work performance of workers, was 25.98 million hours (an 18.9% increase year-on-year). Consequently, the total wage amount generated through spot work reached \31 billion (a 24.3% increase year-on-year). The market has grown to a scale exceeding \30 billion on a quarterly basis. This is driven by the expanding utilization in industries facing severe labor shortages.
Looking at the nationwide number of job postings by job type in this period, "Customer Service and Food Service" (1.164 million postings) and "Transportation" (1.029 million postings) still account for a large share. However, in terms of growth rate, "Outside Sales and Office Work" (up 122.2% year-on-year), "Agriculture" (up 95.7% year-on-year), "Care Services" (up 73.5% year-on-year), and "Professional Social Welfare Services" (up 69.0% year-on-year) have surged. Spot work is expanding beyond traditional areas like food service and logistics, serving as infrastructure to supplement chronic labor shortages in primary industries and specialized welfare fields.
