Standard Products Releases New Designs for Sakai Tenugui and Marugame Uchiwa as Part of its Regional Industry Series

Standard Products by DAISO, operated by Daiso Sangyo, has launched eight new designs featuring Japanese folk toys for its Sakai tenugui and Marugame uchiwa fans, two popular items in its Regional Industry Series. The products have been available at all Standard Products stores across Japan since early May 2026.

Under the concept of 'Good quality, good comfort,' Standard Products focuses on collaborations with regional industries to share the charm of high-quality 'Made in Japan' products domestically and internationally.

The 'folk toys' featured in this collection reflect the characteristics of their respective local climates and have been cherished for years as ornaments to wish for good health or as traditional children's toys.

By incorporating these motifs into tenugui and uchiwa, the brand aims to encourage the integration and appreciation of folk crafts in people's daily lives.

Motifs The new designs include eight varieties: Inu-hariko (papier-mâché dog), Mokubori-kuma (wood-carved bear), Kujira-guruma (whale cart), Kumi-sumo (wrestling toys), Iwai-tai (celebratory sea bream), Shika-hariko (papier-mâché deer), Hato-bue (dove whistle), and a refreshed version of the popular Akabeko (red cow) introduced in the 2023 fan series.

Sakai Tenugui Produced in Sakai City, Osaka, a leading production area for tenugui, these items are made of 'Wazarashi' (bleached cotton). Wazarashi offers excellent absorbency and quick-drying, becoming softer with use. These new designs express the folk toys of Japan with the gentle texture of Wazarashi. Marugame Uchiwa Fans Produced in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan's top production area for fans, these are made of flat bamboo. The characteristic flexibility of the flat bamboo generates a comfortable breeze. These durable and practical items now feature folk toy designs, making them suitable for use as both cooling tools and interior decorations.
