Hello. We are pleased to announce the upcoming Nicotto! Live session, brought to you by "Nicotto!塾," an online parenting塾 where children can move closer to their dreams by the number of common sense notions a mother discards.
In recent years, how parents should interact with children who cannot go to school, or want to go but cannot, has become a major challenge for families. According to the Reiwa 6 (2024) survey released by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the number of elementary and junior high school students absent from school due to non-attendance reached approximately 354,000, a record high. This is often due to a combination of factors, including anxiety about school life, changes in environment, interpersonal relationships, and developmental characteristics.
Especially before summer break, it is a time when the fatigue from the first term and anxiety about school life tend to surface. For children who say, "I don't want to go to school" or "I'm scared of school," continuing to encourage, persuade, or praise them can unfortunately lead to strained communication between parent and child.
Therefore, this time, we will hold a Nicotto! Live session themed "Praise-Free Encouragement" to foster "genuine confidence" in children who are increasingly unable to attend school, enabling them to go to school energetically in the second term.
Miho Yokoyama, a specialist in school refusal and a developmental science communication trainer, will introduce interaction methods that can be done at home, based on neuroscience. She will draw upon examples of children who were able to attend school or extracurricular activities after changing their home communication, including cases of school refusal and even children who could no longer attend extracurricular activities.
The session will explain a perspective for assessing a child's condition based on a stage check that identifies the urgency of school refusal and non-attendance. Following this, she will share strategies for resolving school refusal and non-attendance at home, and methods for transforming daily communication into "communication that reaches the brain," with practical examples.
When dealing with school refusal, the focus often shifts to the decision of "whether to make them go or let them stay home." However, when a child's brain is filled with anxiety and tension, it may be necessary to first foster a sense of security at home and encourage their ability to take initiative.
We hope this live session will serve as an opportunity to view a child's school refusal not as "laziness" or "willfulness," but as a chance to assess their current state, find a step that can be taken at home, and provide hints for parents and children to move forward gradually towards the second term.
