ENECHANGE and Square Enix to Jointly Develop New Service Supporting Decarbonization Actions

ENECHANGE Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tomoya Maruoka; hereinafter "ENECHANGE") and Square Enix Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President: Ryuji Kiryu; hereinafter "Square Enix") announce the joint development of a new service (hereinafter "the service") designed to support individuals' decarbonization actions. The launch of the service is scheduled for 2026.

This project has been selected under the "Promotion of Environment-Friendly Behavior" and "CO2 Emission Reduction Measures" subsidy programs by the Ministry of the Environment, as part of the government's "Deco Katsu" (a national initiative to create a new, rich lifestyle linked to decarbonization) promotion initiative, specifically under the project titled "Promoting Lifestyle Shifts toward Decarbonization through Gamification."

Background and Objectives

The Japanese government has declared its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by fiscal year 2030 compared to fiscal year 2013※1. In particular, a 66% reduction in emissions※1 is required in the household sector, necessitating active adoption of decarbonization actions by the general public. However, despite growing awareness of the term "decarbonization"※2, challenges remain in helping individuals initiate and sustain such actions due to factors such as "lack of information" and "difficulty maintaining conscious behavioral changes"※2.

To address these challenges, the new service will combine Square Enix's expertise in entertainment with ENECHANGE's knowledge and platform in energy and decarbonization to deliver a new application that supports individuals in taking decarbonization actions.

Service Features

The service will feature everyday decarbonization actions such as "energy saving" and "efficiency improvement" as "missions." Users will earn "points" as rewards for completing these missions. By clearly visualizing decarbonization actions as missions and offering tangible rewards through point accumulation, the service aims to help users better understand the significance of their actions. Additionally, under an original game world developed specifically for the application, the service will include character development elements—where users can grow in-game characters—so that the more characters grow, the more point rewards they can earn, transforming sustained engagement into an enjoyable experience. Points will be funded through advertising revenue and sponsorships from companies and organizations, and can be exchanged for common loyalty points (as seen in "point economy" services) or in-app game items.

Missions will be continuously updated and expanded through collaborations with municipalities, companies, and organizations committed to decarbonization. The service will also promote understanding and solutions for regional environmental challenges and raise awareness and provide experience opportunities for GX (Green Transformation) products and services.

Additionally, the service will utilize Oasys, a blockchain platform based on the environmentally conscious Proof-of-Stake mechanism, to ensure transparency and reliability through tamper-resistant data management.
