Econecol, a consolidated subsidiary of Enbiro Holdings, has officially implemented an 'Automated Feeding Control System' for shredder facilities, developed in collaboration with Earthtechnica, at its own plant.

This initiative aims to prevent the operational reliance on specific individuals, a common challenge in recycling plants handling heterogeneous waste, and contributes to reducing the physical and mental burden on operators, while addressing industry-wide labor shortages. The system and its operations are being showcased at the Earthtechnica booth at the '2026 NEW Environmental Exhibition,' held at Tokyo Big Sight starting today, May 20, 2026.

Background and Industry Challenges Waste brought into recycling plants varies greatly in shape, material, and hardness. Consequently, the shredder-feeding process has historically relied on the 'eyes and senses' of skilled operators who continuously monitor multiple screens and instruments, making instantaneous decisions on feed volume and machine rotation speeds based on the characteristics of the material.

However, this work requires constant high concentration, placing a significant burden on both the body and mind. Furthermore, differences in experience and proficiency among operators often lead to variations in processing volume, making the resolution of chronic labor shortages and operational dependency, as well as the creation of a better working environment, urgent priorities for the industry.

Results of Implementing the 'Automated Feeding Control System' By modeling the operational data and judgment criteria of skilled operators at Econecol and training an AI, the following results have been achieved:

- **Stabilization of Processing Volume and Elimination of Operational Dependency**: By performing optimal feeding automatically, regardless of operator experience, the system achieves a stable and high production volume equivalent to or greater than that of skilled operators. - **Reduced Operator Burden**: Leveraging AI for tasks requiring constant monitoring and complex judgment allows for a safer and more worker-friendly environment. - **Response to Labor Shortages**: Stable factory operation is now possible even with limited personnel, realizing sustainable plant management.

Future Outlook and Industry Contribution Waste delivered to Econecol is classified into three main types. Currently, automated operation has been successfully achieved for automotive scrap, and efforts are underway to automate the second type of waste.

Looking ahead, the company intends to apply this system to crane feeding operations and downstream process automation, with an eye toward achieving unmanned night operations and remote control. Together with Earthtechnica, Econecol will promote the construction of next-generation, safe, and smart recycling plants, contributing to resolving labor shortages and stabilizing recycling quality for the entire resource circulation industry.
