Canon has been named a Leader for the second time in the latest report by IDC, a U.S.-based IT research firm, titled 'IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Sustainability Programs and Services Hardcopy 2026 Vendor Assessment (※)', following its initial recognition in the 2023 evaluation.
This assessment evaluates 11 major global hardcopy vendors based on their sustainability strategies and operations. The report states: 'Canon is a suitable vendor for organizations seeking a technology-led, comprehensive sustainability approach, including advanced recycling, remanufacturing, and optimal digital utilization. Enterprises and mid-to-small businesses aiming to advance sustainability goals through innovative solutions should consider Canon.'
Canon is advancing technological development and systemic initiatives to support resource circulation and decarbonization across the entire product lifecycle—from raw material sourcing to production, distribution, usage, maintenance, and end-of-life recycling. The company is globally reducing environmental impact by minimizing the use of virgin resources, increasing recycled material usage, reducing waste, and lowering CO2 emissions during production and product use.
For resource circulation, Canon operates a copier remanufacturing (remanufacturing) business, restoring used copiers to like-new condition. Utilizing proprietary production processes and remanufacturing technologies established at facilities in Japan and Germany, remanufactured copiers achieve over 90% parts reuse by weight per unit, while maintaining high quality and performance at a lower price point. In April 2026, Canon will launch this remanufacturing business in the United States, further expanding its global footprint. Additionally, Canon continues its industry-leading 'Toner Cartridge Recycling Program,' initiated in 1990. Used toner cartridges are collected from 24 countries and recycled at facilities in Japan, France, the U.S., and China. The plastic recovered from used cartridges is regenerated to match the quality of virgin plastic and reused in new toner cartridges.
Regarding decarbonization, Canon set a goal in 2008 to improve the lifecycle CO2 index per product by an average of 3% annually. By 2025, the company achieved an average annual improvement of approximately 3.59%, resulting in a cumulative reduction of about 45.5%. Moving forward, Canon will continue reducing environmental impact through various products, technologies, and business activities, aiming to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions across the entire product lifecycle by 2050.
