Hankyu Travel International Co., Ltd. (Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka; President and CEO: Toyoji Yamakawa) has compiled travel trends based on booking status for package tours departing during the 2026 summer vacation period (departures from July 15 to August 31).
Bookings for overseas travel were 98.0% of the previous year, and while some impact from the Middle East situation is observed, demand remains firm overall. Domestic travel is at 103.0% of the previous year, exceeding last year. On the other hand, compared to Golden Week, both domestic and overseas travel bookings show a slight decrease compared to the previous year. It is believed that the ongoing price increases, the weak yen, and soaring fuel surcharges are significantly impacting consumers' travel mindset.
[Overseas Travel]
Peak Departure Dates: 1st: August 7 (Fri), 2nd: August 20 (Thu), 3rd: August 5 (Wed)
Overseas travel is at 98.0% compared to the same period last year. Europe continues to hold a large share and maintain high popularity. Neighboring Asian regions such as Taiwan and South Korea are also firm. Singapore and Malaysia, in particular, are significantly higher than last year and are being chosen even amidst high prices and fuel costs.
Furthermore, Hawaii, a classic resort destination, as well as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Central and South America, have shown significant growth compared to last year. Business class usage is particularly high on long-haul routes, with one in four travelers to Central and North America choosing business class. For accommodations, products utilizing high-grade hotels are favored, indicating a stronger preference for luxurious experiences on long-distance summer trips.
In terms of year-on-year growth rate, 1st is Australia, 2nd is Central and South America, and 3rd is Indonesia.
[Domestic Travel]
Peak Departure Dates: 1st: August 2 (Sun), 2nd: July 26 (Sun), 3rd: August 3 (Mon)
Domestic travel is proceeding at 103.0% compared to the same period last year. Demand for seasonal events such as traditional festivals and fireworks across Japan remains strong.
By region, Hokuriku/Koshinetsu ranks first, driven by tours to the "Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display," one of Japan's three major fireworks festivals, and the "Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route." In Kinki, which ranks second, day trip bus tours to Awaji Island and Okayama are popular as easy trips. In Hokkaido, ranking third, standard plans combining hot springs and gourmet food based in Hakodate and Sapporo are supported. Interest in experiences that can only be enjoyed during this period is high every year, with tours to the Tohoku Summer Festivals such as the "Aomori Nebuta Festival" and "Akita Kanto Festival" performing well. In Kanto, ranking fifth, trips to hot spring resorts for theater viewing and all-inclusive stays are popular.
In terms of year-on-year growth rate, 1st is Shikoku, 2nd is Kyushu, and 3rd is Tokai. Shikoku, ranking first, has popular day trip tours to the "Komatsushima Port Festival 2026," where the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's "Blue Impulse" aerobatic team is scheduled to perform, as well as tours incorporating viewing of the "Yosakoi Festival" and "Awa Odori."
