Historia, an Unreal Engine software development company, has announced 'REAL MOON Studio,' a lunar environment digital twin capable of recreating lunar surfaces based on observation data and scientific papers to support the planning and verification of exploration missions, developed in collaboration with JAXA.
'REAL MOON Studio' constructs lunar environments using DEM data, crater distributions, and rock distributions. It supports a wide range of mission applications, including integration with rover simulation environments, visualization of lunar building placements, and output of annotation data for AI training.
Leveraging Unreal Engine's real-time rendering, it achieves high-fidelity shading via physical-based rendering, video output reflecting real camera lens characteristics, and interactive verification of broad areas up to 240km x 240km.
It faithfully reproduces surface terrain, crater density, and rock distribution, primarily for the lunar polar region. Solar environment simulation utilizes 'MaxQ,' an Unreal Engine 5 plugin based on NASA's SPICE Toolkit.
The system integrates with external rover simulation environments such as ROS, MATLAB, and AGX Dynamics, allowing for rover motion visualization, sensor input generation, and route design support through slope visualization. It also includes the 'historia UE Annotation Tool' for AI training data output and route exploration features.
The studio will exhibit at 'SPEXA - International Space Business Exhibition' (May 27–29 at Tokyo Big Sight), where demonstrations will be available.
