Hmcomm Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President & CEO: Koji Mimoto; hereinafter 'Hmcomm') is pleased to announce that based on the results of the collaborative demonstration experiment of water pipe leak detection using AI conducted with Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, the demonstration will continue in FY2026 (hereinafter 'this fiscal year'), moving into the next phase toward social implementation.
This initiative utilizes Hmcomm's core acoustic analysis AI technology (Sound x AI) to detect and analyze minute leak sounds from water pipes. The goal is to enhance and streamline leak investigations, which have traditionally relied on the experience of skilled technicians.
In the demonstration with Moriyama City, the effectiveness of AI-based leak detection was confirmed, with cases showing AI judgment results comparable to those of experienced investigators. Based on these achievements, the partnership with Moriyama City will continue through this fiscal year.
Hmcomm, in collaboration with Moriyama City, will proceed with expanding verification in actual operational environments and advancing efforts toward full social implementation.
### Results of the Demonstration Experiment The following results were confirmed through the demonstration with Moriyama City using Hmcomm's proprietary acoustic analysis AI: - Confirmation of the effectiveness of AI-based leak sound detection. - Confirmation of cases where AI judgment results were comparable to those of skilled investigators. - Confirmation of the feasibility of the AI leak detection process in actual operational environments. These results affirm the potential of a new maintenance and management method utilizing AI in the field of water infrastructure.
### Initiatives for the Current Fiscal Year With a view toward social implementation, the following initiatives will be pursued in this year's demonstration: - Expansion of AI leak detection verification in actual operational environments. - Further improvement of AI judgment accuracy and operational efficiency. - Study of AI application models in water infrastructure. The goal is to establish a next-generation water infrastructure management model using AI.
### Comment from Takashi Morinaka, Mayor of Moriyama City 'We recognize that addressing aging infrastructure, starting with water systems, is a critical administrative issue. The 2025 demonstration confirmed the potential of new maintenance methods using AI, and we have high expectations for its social implementation. We will continue to provide strong support through this public-private partnership project toward achieving sustainable infrastructure management.'
### Background Japan is facing aging water pipes installed during the high economic growth period, making leak countermeasures and sophisticated maintenance management key priorities for local governments. However, leak investigations often rely heavily on the ears and experience of skilled technicians, presenting challenges such as labor shortages and investigation efficiency. Hmcomm is developing AI monitoring solutions for social infrastructure using acoustic analysis AI technology and aims for the social implementation of AI in the water infrastructure sector through this initiative.
### Future Developments This technology is expected to apply not only to water infrastructure but also to various social infrastructure monitoring fields such as gas pipes, roads, and bridges. Moving forward, we intend to promote the social implementation and commercialization of AI in the social infrastructure sector, with a view toward expanding to municipalities nationwide.
