Hololab Digitally Archives Chair Researcher Noritsugu Oda's Residence Using 3D Gaussian Splatting

Hololab Inc. has participated in a digital archive project led by Reddit Inc. to create a high-definition digital record of the interior and exterior of the 'Oda Residence,' home to world-renowned chair researcher Noritsugu Oda. The project was initiated to permanently capture the 'living memories' of the space, which houses a vast collection, before Oda's scheduled relocation in September 2025. The residence is a 'living museum' featuring thousands of pieces of furniture, including masterpieces by 20th-century design masters like Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. To balance architectural precision with the delicate textures of the furniture, Hololab employed a hybrid workflow combining terrestrial laser scanning and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). This allowed for the reproduction of reflections, transparency, and soft light diffusion—elements difficult to capture with traditional photogrammetry—successfully digitizing the very 'atmosphere' of the space. Furthermore, by synthesizing the image of Mr. Oda himself working in his study into the spatial data, the project achieved an archive with a 'narrative' that transcends mere documentation. The Oda Collection Association is currently considering making the archive available to its members.
