Overview of 'HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE'

Since opening 'HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO' on November 3, 2020, the HOTEL THE MITSUI brand has been guided by the concept of 'Embracing Japan’s Beauty', honoring the unique aesthetics found in traditional culture, architecture, craftsmanship, and cuisine. With meticulous care and refined service, the brand delivers exceptional and relaxing experiences to every guest. This concept will be carried forward at the new Hakone property, offering world-class facilities and service while fully leveraging Hakone’s exceptional natural environment.

The hotel is located within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Spanning approximately 14 hectares with a 45-meter elevation difference, the site preserves the primeval forest on the Mount Asama side south of the Jakkotsu River, ensuring that the land’s rich natural environment and topography are passed on to future generations. As guests ascend the lush green approach, they leave behind the outside world, welcomed by an entrance with a grand roof. Passing beneath it reveals a sweeping view of Mount Asama, marking the beginning of a stay experience deeply connected with nature.

Interior design is led by the globally renowned design firm Yabu Pushelberg, creating a refined and open atmosphere through spaces thoughtfully harmonized with nature.

The property features 126 guest rooms, all with natural hot spring baths, along with restaurants, thermal springs, a spa, and a detached villa named 'Shunkian'. Guests will enjoy a holistic resort experience enriched by Hakone’s nature, cuisine, hot springs, and culture.

Accommodation reservations will begin on July 15, 2026. Further details will be available on the official website.

Thermal Spring SPA Overview

Unlike the underground thermal spring at 'HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO' located in central Kyoto, the open-air and indoor thermal spring at this property offers a spacious experience where guests can enjoy natural hot springs both indoors and outdoors. Set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Asama and the gentle sound of the Jakkotsu River, the space unites sky, forest, and water. The indoor and outdoor areas each offer unique charms, delivering a special wellness experience centered on healing and relaxation.

The spa also features five treatment rooms, including one couples’ suite, where guests can enjoy exclusive treatment menus developed specifically for the hotel.

Centered on the concept of 'Entrusting in Tranquility', the spa offers a peaceful moment where guests can breathe with the forest, immerse themselves in nature, and find deep relaxation for both mind and body.

Restaurant Overview

Culinary operations will be led by Hiroshi Takahashi, who previously served as Executive Sous Chef at The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo and Executive Chef at Halekulani Okinawa. At the specialty Japanese restaurant 'SANKEI', the all-day dining venue 'RIVERINE', and the bar 'The Bar LAMBENT', guests will enjoy cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients, including those from Hakone.

Dining can be enjoyed from open terraces and interior seats oriented toward the outdoors, allowing guests to savor meals surrounded by the area’s rich natural environment.

Japanese Restaurant 'SANKEI'

Set within a space featuring views of primeval forest outside the windows and soft bamboo crafts reminiscent of Hakone’s bamboo groves, guests can enjoy three distinct dining styles: kaiseki, sushi, and teppanyaki.

Chef Koshiro Kurosu, who has earned one Michelin star for three consecutive years, leads the kitchen. Drawing inspiration from Hakone’s natural landscape, the menu follows the philosophy of 'Shindo-fuji (You are what you eat and where you eat)', using carefully selected seasonal ingredients from the local region and across Japan. Guests will savor the seasonal bounty of nature, crafted by skilled artisans.

*Shindo-fuji (Shin-Do-Fu-Ji) is a concept originating from Buddhist teachings, meaning 'the body and the surrounding environment (earth) are inseparable and fundamentally one'. It emphasizes eating local and seasonal ingredients as a way to harmonize with nature and the environment.
