The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) Nagasaki Branch (Branch Manager: Koji Enda) will hold a harvest experience event, "JAF Day Spring Strawberry Picking in Unzen City," on Sunday, April 26, 2026. This event aims to promote the charm of local agriculture and support producers, in collaboration with Shimoda Farm, which cultivates "Koiminori," one of Nagasaki Prefecture's representative strawberry varieties.

This event is a special JAF Day exclusive project where participants can enjoy strawberry picking at Shimoda Farm, which usually does not offer harvest experiences to the general public. Participants can learn about the charm of Unzen strawberries and the current state of agriculture while listening directly to the producers, and enjoy the harvesting experience.

Furthermore, this time, it comes with a special offer: "take home 1 pack of strawberries you picked as a souvenir." You can enjoy the sweetness and aroma of "Koiminori" at home.

The Charm of Unzen Strawberries "Koiminori"

The "Koiminori" strawberry, which participants can harvest this time, is one of the most popular varieties in Nagasaki Prefecture. Its appeal lies in its strong sweetness, elegant aroma, and firm flesh that you feel with every bite. It is also known for producing large, well-shaped fruits, offering a satisfying eating experience with a refreshing aftertaste, making it popular across a wide range of ages.

Behind its deliciousness, there are many labor-intensive processes such as picking and temperature control, and stable production is difficult amidst a shortage of successors.

Agriculture Facing a Shortage of Successors: Creating Opportunities to "Know" to Support the Region

In Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, the aging of the agricultural population and a shortage of successors are major issues. Statistics from the Unzen City Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Promotion Plan show that the agricultural workforce is decreasing year by year, highlighting the challenge of maintaining the production system in the region.

On the other hand, opportunities for consumers to learn about producers' efforts and understand the value of local agricultural products remain limited.

Therefore, the JAF Nagasaki Branch decided to implement this project, believing that conveying the charm of the region through "experience" would be an opportunity to connect agriculture and local culture to the future. We hope that through this event, many people will experience local agriculture and the charm of Unzen in a fun way. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
