Japan's First Solar PPA Service Utilizing Chalcopyrite Solar Cells Launched

JFE Engineering Corporation, Urban Energy Corporation, and Tokyo Century Corporation have commenced a solar PPA service in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, as of May 1, 2026. Utilizing Niigata Prefecture's subsidy program, the project involves installing PXP-manufactured chalcopyrite solar cells at the Myoko Clean Center. Chalcopyrite is gaining attention as a lightweight, flexible next-generation solar cell, and this marks the first such municipal PPA project in Japan. JFE Engineering provides technical support, Urban Energy handles power supply, and Tokyo Century manages finance and project development. The technology addresses challenges in snowy regions, such as roof load and low sunlight, due to its lightweight and high efficiency in cloudy conditions. It also enables installation on curved roofs. The companies aim to expand this model to contribute to a decarbonized society.
