JFE Techno Research (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kazuhiro Hanazawa) has launched a contract evaluation service that visualizes high-speed deformation behavior using multi-high-speed DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technology. This service is an evaluation solution that supports the improvement of collision safety performance and impact resistance in the automotive, aerospace, and security fields.

What is High-Speed DIC (Digital Image Correlation)?

DIC is an advanced technology that visualizes minute displacement and strain distribution during high-speed deformation of materials and components by analyzing continuous images captured by high-speed cameras. It can capture the overall deformation behavior over an area, which could not be captured by conventional point measurements, making it powerful for elucidating material fracture mechanisms and discovering product weaknesses.

Background of Service Provision

In recent years, demand for evaluating impact resistance and cut resistance in the aerospace and security fields, in addition to improving collision safety performance in automobiles, has been rapidly increasing. Especially for new materials and special components, there are growing customer voices saying, "We don't know how to evaluate them" or "Others couldn't handle it." To address these challenges, we have built a comprehensive high-speed testing service that leverages the extensive experience and technology of the JFE Group.

Figure 1. High-speed crushing test using a large-aperture drop weight impact tester

Evaluates high-speed crushing characteristics of large mechanical parts, etc., through large-aperture drop weight tests. The deformation behavior of the test piece during the test is visualized with a high-speed camera.

Figure 2. Displacement/strain distribution analysis by DIC

It is possible to visualize and display the distribution of deformation (displacement) and strain of the test piece during various mechanical property tests (tensile test shown in the photo).

Strain can be measured at any arbitrary position even after the test, allowing for detailed follow-up analysis of fracture strain or areas that showed interesting behavior.

Features of This Service

1. Responsiveness to a Wide Range of Test Conditions

With a diverse lineup of testing machines and measurement options, we realize a wide variety of high-speed test conditions (load/test speed/temperature/measurement items/load application methods, etc.). Evaluation can be performed under optimal test conditions tailored to the environment in which the product will be used.

2. Unique Micro-Deformation Visualization Technology

Our high-precision high-speed DIC technology visualizes minute deformations and strains of materials during high-speed deformation, capturing fracture mechanisms and providing valuable information for discovering product weaknesses and identifying areas for improvement in product development.

3. Flexible Response to Special Materials and Difficult Evaluations

Our technical staff, with extensive experience and knowledge, can flexibly propose evaluation methods by combining various jigs and testing equipment, even for unprecedented special components, materials, or challenging evaluation cases.

4. One-Stop Evaluation System

We provide integrated services from evaluation plan proposal to experimental data acquisition and result analysis. Furthermore, we have established a system where JFE Techno Research can provide one-stop support, including CAE analysis using data obtained from this service. Our specialized team provides continuous support, contributing to shortening customer development time and improving evaluation accuracy.

Future Outlook

JFE Techno Research is working to build a system that can respond more quickly and reliably to the growing demand for high-speed testing, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, and security fields. We will also focus on developing cutting-edge evaluation technologies in line with industry technological innovations, contributing to the improvement of customer product development efficiency and quality.
