JLAU Global Landscape Dialogues 1.1

JLAU (Japan Landscape Architects Union) will hold the "Global Landscape Dialogues," an online talk series aimed at allowing landscape practitioners, educators, and experts from overseas and Japan to share their knowledge and experiences with each other while comparing practices in different regions, and to explore the diversity and commonalities of landscapes born from regional contexts.

A total of four sessions are planned for fiscal year 2026, and through continuous hosting in the next fiscal year and beyond, we aim to discover new perspectives on issues that should be tackled across borders, and to develop this into a permanent platform that expands the possibilities of international knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Event Details and Program ■ Session 1 Theme: Practice Crossing Planning and Design - New York and Local Cities in Japan - In the inaugural [Dialogue 1.1], we will have landscape practitioners from the New York-based design firm Starr Whitehouse, Landscape Architects and Planners PLLC, and the Tokyo-based Kamijo Fukushima Urban Design Office Co., Ltd. take the stage. While introducing practices rooted in their respective regions, they will compare initiatives in different cities and regions, and discuss diverse approaches and perspectives in landscape architecture.

Speakers Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners PLLC (New York) - Jeffrey Poor - Gail Wittwer-Laird A landscape architecture, planning, and urban design firm with offices in New York, Atlanta, and Hudson. They plan and design public spaces such as parks, waterfronts, and streets, working collaboratively with government agencies, private businesses, and local communities to create spaces that connect people with nature and people with people.

Kamijo Fukushima Urban Design Office Co., Ltd. (Tokyo) - Shinji Kamijo - Hideya Fukushima Crossing civil engineering, urbanism, and landscape, they propose and design the appearance of cities and towns for a new era rooted in the history and living culture of the region. They consistently handle the planning and design of infrastructure that forms the foundation of local communities, such as areas around stations, central city areas, rivers, parks, and plazas, in collaboration with government and citizens.
