[Lecture Overview] In recent years, the issue of "drug loss"—pharmaceuticals approved in the West but not developed in Japan—has become prominent, raising concerns that innovative medicines may not be available to the Japanese public. In response, the public and private sectors are working together to: 1) strengthen Japan's drug discovery capabilities, 2) deliver the latest medicines to citizens rapidly, and 3) build a social system where a cycle of investment and innovation is sustained. This lecture will provide an overview of government initiatives to build a drug discovery ecosystem in Japan, as well as a detailed explanation of the current state of clinical trials and various measures being implemented by the MHLW to promote them.
