NEC announced that a final report verifying the decarbonization effects of its smart agriculture solution 'CropScope' has been published under the Net Carbon Impact project conducted by the European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC). The EGDC is a coalition established to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across society through the use of digital technology. In this project, the net carbon impact is quantitatively evaluated by comparing scenarios where digital technology is used versus when it is not. This case study focused on the variable fertilization function of CropScope, and through verification at a farm in Hokkaido, it was confirmed that reducing fertilizer usage suppresses the generation of nitrous oxide, contributing significantly to decarbonization. For all crops tested, the net carbon impact from reduced fertilizer usage significantly exceeded the emissions associated with tractor operation, demonstrating the compatibility of agricultural sustainability and climate change countermeasures.
