The Japan Quality Assurance Organization (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Hiroaki Ishii) has newly launched the "Testing of Surface Impregnation Materials" service starting May 2026. This service is designed to evaluate the performance of "surface impregnation materials," which are used to protect concrete in structures such as roads and bridges.

Following the legalization of the regular inspection system for road bridges in 2014 and the completion of the second round of inspections in 2023, the maintenance of concrete structures is undergoing a major transition from the conventional "reactive maintenance and repair-centric" approach to "preventive preservation."

Against this backdrop, the surface impregnation method, which involves applying and penetrating materials onto the concrete surface, has been gaining attention in recent years as a preventive preservation technology.

Proper use of surface impregnation materials is expected to improve the durability of concrete and significantly contribute to extending the lifespan of structures.

Expected Effects of Using Surface Impregnation Materials

① Suppression of concrete neutralization

② Inhibition of salt damage progression

③ Reduction of cracking risk

Water Permeability Test

Confirms the extent to which water penetration is prevented after the application of impregnation material.

JQA offers various tests to evaluate these performances, supporting the appropriate selection and quality assurance of surface impregnation materials.
