The JR East Group is positioning JR Ueno Station as a 'Cultural Creation HUB' to realize the Lifestyle Transformation (LX) outlined in its group management vision, 'Yu-Sho 2034.' Through 'culture,' the station connects people, towns, and regions to create new value.
On June 16, 2026, the stage for the 'Cultural Creation HUB' will be completed with the debut of 'UENO CANVAS,' one of JR East's largest digital signage installations. To mark the occasion, the renovated Ueno Station will be decorated, signaling the start of co-creative community development originating at the station.
In partnership with 'Peter Rabbit™,' which marks the 160th anniversary of its creator Beatrix Potter in 2026, JR Ueno Station will feature exclusive decorations combining Peter Rabbit with pandas, along with special video projections at Platform 13. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Ueno 'Forest' and the town, the 'Peter Rabbit™ Eki-tag Stamp Rally' will be held from June 8 to June 28, 2026, encouraging visitors to explore the diverse charms of Ueno.
1. Promoting Co-creative Community Development Originating from the Station JR East aims for a society filled with compassion and excitement. By designating Ueno Station as a 'Cultural Creation HUB,' it will connect 'people,' 'towns,' and 'regions' through culture to create new value. The renovated grand concourse strengthens its 'HUB' function, promoting co-creative urban development.
(1) Birth of 'UENO CANVAS,' a Zero-Carbon Media On June 16, 2026, a high-definition LED vision screen spanning approximately 75 square meters will debut in front of the central ticket gate. This immersive media space will broadcast content introducing local facilities, history, and artistic culture. Utilizing Tokyo's cap-and-trade system, it will operate as a 'zero-carbon media' platform with a net-zero annual CO₂ emission (280t-CO₂/year).
(2) Grand Concourse Renovation after Approximately 20 Years The grand concourse, which dates back to 1932, has undergone two years of renovations. The space in front of the central ticket gate has been expanded, creating an open, canvas-like atmosphere for art and culture. Under the creative direction of Polar and SPREAD, the station is decorated under the 'Cultural Creation HUB' theme. The key visual, 'UENO FREEDOM COLOR,' is based on colors extracted from Genichiro Inokuma's mural 'Freedom' (1951), modernized by SPREAD. It is deployed across interior designs, signage, and video, color-bridging the history of Ueno Station to the present day.
2. Creating Cultural Experiences and Promoting Regional Exploration (1) Collaboration with Peter Rabbit™, Celebrating its Creator's 160th Anniversary Surrounded by Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo, and Shinobazu Pond, Ueno Station—a landmark with rich nature and history—is collaborating with Peter Rabbit™, loved worldwide for many years. To celebrate Beatrix Potter's 160th anniversary, exclusive decorations featuring Peter Rabbit and pandas will be displayed throughout the station. Original special videos showcasing Beatrix Potter's sketches, correspondence, and character animations will be projected in a 100-meter-long visual space at Platform 13.
(2) 'Peter Rabbit™ Eki-tag Stamp Rally' A digital stamp rally will be held, allowing visitors to collect stamps of Peter Rabbit and his friends while touring Ueno's 'Forest' and the surrounding town.
