The Korean Cultural Center Osaka (Director Kim Hye-su) and Korea National Folk Gugak Center (Director Kim Jun-hyeon) will co-present the pansori drama 'Chunhyang' at two venues in Japan: National Bunraku Theater, Osaka on July 9 (Thu), and National Theater Okinawa Main Hall on July 13 (Mon), 2026. Both performances start at 19:00 (doors 18:00) and run approximately 80 minutes.
Pansori, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a traditional Korean performing art in which a solo singer narrates long stories through song, speech, and gesture accompanied by drumming. This production expands the form into 'changgeuk' style, with multiple performers sharing roles and adding dance, while retaining the vocal essence of pansori.
The story follows Chunhyang, daughter of a gisaeng courtesan, and Mongnyong, a young nobleman, as they overcome class barriers and hardship in a tale of enduring love. The drama condenses the classic 'Chunhyangga' into eight narrative movements from courtship to reunion.
Both performances are free. Advance lottery registration is required; the deadline is June 23 (Tue). Winners will be notified by postcard on June 24 (Wed). Japanese subtitles provided. Details: https://k-culture.jp
