Kyoto Meadery (operated by Kaneichi Shoten Co., Ltd.) announced the release of 'Nobunaga Mead,' a honey wine themed after the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga, scheduled for June 2, 2026. Inspired by the Honno-ji Incident of June 2, 1582, this project aims to express Nobunaga's grand vision and aesthetic on the eve of his attempted unification of Japan.
The product features a 'coarsely filtered mead' made from domestic wildflower honey. By intentionally using a coarse filtration process—a first for this meadery—the brewery aims to evoke the powerful, textured flavors that might have characterized sake during the Sengoku period before modern filtration existed. The mead is housed in a heavy black bottle to reflect Nobunaga's strength and philosophy.
The key visual is a special illustration by sumie (ink) artist Okazu, depicting Nobunaga charging through a battlefield. Mead, known as the world's oldest alcoholic beverage, resonates with Nobunaga's affinity for foreign 'Nanban' culture and innovative spirit. On the release day, the company will host a booth at the 'Nobunaga-ko Ki' memorial service at Honno-ji Temple in Kyoto, where the mead will be offered to the temple and available for tasting and purchase.
