Comments Arrive from Tsubasa Yamaguchi, Author of "Blue Period," and Editor-in-Chief Akira Kanai!

"Blue Period" depicts the struggles of Yaguchi Yatora as he aims to enter art school. Comments have arrived from Tsubasa Yamaguchi, the author of this work serialized in Afternoon, and Akira Kanai, the 6th Editor-in-Chief of Afternoon, regarding their feelings about Afternoon's 40th anniversary, the secret to its long-lasting popularity, and their expectations for the upcoming Afternoon 40th Anniversary Exhibition.

<Tsubasa Yamaguchi's Comments>

-- You have a serialization at the time of the 40th anniversary. How do you feel about it?

It's truly something to be grateful for. To be able to be a part of such a milestone and be invited for interviews is, from the perspective of my younger self as a reader, an incredible thing. My high school self would be very surprised if they heard this.

-- What are you looking forward to at the Afternoon 40th Anniversary Exhibition?

I'm looking forward to seeing merchandise from works that are not usually seen. I love merchandise so much that I even run a company that produces manga goods. I consider merchandise to be like "charms," so I'm excited to check out items I can carry around and wear. I definitely plan to buy T-shirts from "Parasyte" and merchandise from Haruko Ichikawa's works. I'm looking forward to many interesting merchandise ideas, such as magnetic sheets designed to match the image of each work.

<Editor-in-Chief Akira Kanai's Comments>

-- What is the secret to continuing to publish Afternoon for 40 years?

In recent years, I'm grateful to often hear that "Afternoon is doing great," but when I became editor-in-chief in 2015, I didn't feel that way at all. However, not as flattery, but the start of "Blue Period" in 2017 was truly significant. At New Year's parties and such, the authors who started serializing after Yamaguchi-san gather around him, influencing each other positively and getting along well. That is very reassuring. I believe the bond among the authors and the good relationship with the editorial department are the secrets to its success and continuation.

-- What are your expectations for the Afternoon 40th Anniversary Exhibition?

Putting aside my position as editor-in-chief, what I'm personally most looking forward to is the "human voice" that can be felt from things like the authors' brief comments. I'm really looking forward to those aspects, and I hope everyone can feel them too.
