LIXIL Housing Research Institute conducted a survey targeting households living with their parents and those living separately, focusing on two-generation homes. The valid responses came from 400 married individuals aged 20s to 40s: 197 living with their parents and 203 living separately. The survey was conducted from February 16 to 22, 2026.
Summary of Survey Results
Among those currently living separately from their parents, future intentions include: continuing to live separately (34.0%), living nearby (14.3%), planning to cohabit in the future (11.8%), and considering cohabitation only if parental care becomes necessary (4.9%).
Satisfaction levels among those cohabiting with parents are very high, exceeding 80%. The top three appealing aspects of cohabitation are: support with housework and childcare (39.6%), reduction of financial burden (35.5%), and peace of mind in emergencies (35.0%). In contrast, for those living separately, the top three appealing factors are: peace of mind in emergencies (31.0%), easy interaction with parents (28.1%), and ability to show filial piety (28.1%).
When all respondents were asked about their ideal layout for a two-generation home, the 'fully separated type' accounted for 56.8%, while the 'fully cohabiting type' reached 41.8%, higher than expected.
Regarding concerns about two-generation homes, those currently cohabiting cited differences in lifestyle rhythms (23.4%) and difficulty inviting friends over (21.8%) as top issues. Among those living separately, the primary concern was also differences in lifestyle rhythms (39.4%), followed by noise and differences in daily schedules (20.7%).
