L'Occitane, a brand proposing a sophisticated lifestyle inspired by the nature of Haute-Provence, has conducted a study on the effects of three scents—Verbena, Lavender, and Citrus Verbena—on mental and physical states. The results confirmed that Verbena is associated with 'focus and immersion,' Lavender with 'relaxation,' and Citrus Verbena with 'vitality.' Furthermore, differences in the speed of response were observed. These findings provide insights for choosing scents based on mood, which will be applied to future product development. The study measured both subjective feelings and physiological responses (EEG, heart rate variability, respiration, pupil reaction) under controlled conditions. The study involved 22 healthy adults using a crossover design. It is noted that this is an exploratory study and does not guarantee identical results for everyone, nor does it claim medical or therapeutic effects. Verbena was found to deepen breathing and promote effortless focus. Lavender activated the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a stable, relaxed state. Citrus Verbena triggered multiple physiological indicators, maintaining an alert state. L'Occitane suggests incorporating these scents into a daily 'self-tuning' routine to manage mental performance and mood transitions in modern life.
