The Tokyo Metropolitan Government held the '4th Coordination Meeting for Response to the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake' today, August 5 (Wed), at 4:00 PM.
In response to this earthquake, Tokyo has been providing assistance based on the situation and needs in the disaster-stricken areas, including dispatching personnel and water supply vehicles, securing public housing for victims, and collecting donations. At the meeting, Kizuki Ushijima, Director of Crisis Management, reported the following updates from each bureau:
・Dispatched 120 members and 45 vehicles of the Metropolitan Police Department’s wide-area emergency aid team, plus over 30 Tokyo metropolitan government employees
・Since August 2, dispatched two water supply trucks and waterworks bureau staff to conduct emergency water distribution primarily in Yatsushiro City, targeting medical facilities and community centers
・Since August 3, dispatched sewerage bureau staff to assess damage to sewage facilities
・Established a comprehensive consultation desk for evacuees residing in Tokyo as of August 4
・Started accepting applications on August 5 for accommodating disaster victims in 100 units of metropolitan public housing
・Preparing to ship heat-shielding tents, sheets, and heatstroke prevention watches as heat countermeasures
Based on reports from the Deputy Director of Crisis Management who conducted an on-site inspection, the Governor emphasized the need to continue accurately monitoring changes in the local situation and needs, and issued the following two instructions to all bureaus:
1. Continue detailed, victim-centered support—such as women-focused assistance and heat countermeasures—that considers diverse needs while also looking ahead to livelihood restoration
2. Actively disseminate information about the support activities
Moving forward, Tokyo will continue implementing initiatives as one unified administration to support those affected by the disaster.
