On May 20, 2026, Micro Magazine Co., Ltd. released "Ooku no Goyuuhitsu: The Last Love Letter" (Author: Asuka Kikukawa / Illustrator: Kaoru Haruno) under its Kotonoha Bunko imprint. Digital distribution of the e-book also began on the same day.
To commemorate the release, a preview of the opening chapter has been made public, and a fair celebrating the final volume is now underway. At participating bookstores, customers will receive one "letter-paper bookmark (2 double-sided designs)" for each book purchased from the "Ooku no Goyuuhitsu" series. Additionally, a lottery is being held where customers who purchase at participating stores and register as a friend on the official LINE account can win an autographed shikishi (art board) by the author, Ms. Asuka Kikukawa (entry deadline: June 30, 2026).
The story's synopsis begins with the protagonist, Risa, frantically searching through Edo to save Kyojiro, who has disappeared from Sanosuke's side. In the process, she uncovers a sad truth that tore bonds apart and the hidden feelings of her late grandmother related to her own spiritual vision. Meanwhile, in the Ooku, which is facing a change of shogun, other characters are also forced to make fateful decisions. The earnest wish of the samurai ghost Sanosuke, "I want to be by Risa's side as much as possible," and Risa's own resolve intertwine, leading the love between the living and the dead to a beautiful, yet bittersweet, eternal conclusion.
In celebration of this finale, e-book stores like Ameba Manga and ebookjapan are holding promotional fairs, including offering the first volume for free and series discounts, until June 2, 2026.
The press release features enthusiastic reviews from bookstore staff and reviewers who read advance copies. The work is praised for the moving and warm reading experience it provides, with comments like, "Risa's kindness purifies the heart," "I couldn't stop crying," and "I'm so glad I encountered this series."
The author, Asuka Kikukawa, resides in Tokyo, and this work is the book adaptation of her award-winning entry in a "moving literature contest." The illustrator, Kaoru Haruno, is a freelance illustrator who loves Japanese style and kimonos. The first volume of the series, "Ooku no Goyuuhitsu: I Will Deliver Your Feelings," is also on sale.
