The Japan Private Railway Association released its FY2025 survey on violence against staff across 16 major private railways. There were 168 reported incidents (102 in the first half, 66 in the second half), a year-on-year increase of 29 cases. As passenger numbers recover, incidents have returned to pre-COVID levels. Incidents frequently involve intoxicated individuals, particularly on Fridays and late at night (after 22:00).\nFour typical cases were highlighted:\n1. Concourse (late night, Wednesday): A staff member mediating a fight was injured when an intoxicated passenger forced open an office door.\n2. Ticket Gate (evening, Sunday): An intoxicated foreign passenger in his 30s slapped two staff members after getting off at the wrong station.\n3. On-train (daytime, Wednesday): A passenger in his 40s struck a crew member's ankle with an umbrella when asked to exit an out-of-service train.\n4. Ticket Gate (late night, Sunday): A passenger in his 20s grabbed the collar of a staff member who woke him up, then punched him in the face near the gate.\nThe association will continue poster campaigns to deter violence and maintain safety.
