Revised Materiality (Key Issues) of the Mitsubishi Electric Group and Newly Established Sub-Materialities
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has revised its 'materiality'—the key issues that the company group must prioritize at the management level to achieve sustainability.
The Mitsubishi Electric Group aims to transform into an 'Innovative Company' that creates value through new ideas without fear of risk, in order to drive both business growth and solutions to social and environmental challenges. Against the backdrop of this transformation and evolving social and environmental conditions surrounding management, the company has newly added 'Promoting Innovation for Sustainability' as a materiality. Additionally, it has established new 'sub-materialities' under each materiality, clarifying the group's strategic direction. For each item, specific goals and performance indicators have been set, and progress will be monitored and managed to promote continuous improvement through PDCA cycles.
Going forward, the group will accelerate 'trade-on' initiatives—simultaneously achieving solutions to social and environmental issues and business growth—through its diverse business portfolio based on this materiality framework, creating future value while pursuing the sustainable development of both society and the Mitsubishi Electric Group.
Background of Materiality Identification and Revision
The Mitsubishi Electric Group identified its materiality and related initiatives in FY2015, in accordance with the GRI Guidelines (Version 4) (Note 1), taking into account social trends and business environments. In FY2020, after extensive discussions incorporating objective evaluations from internal and external stakeholders—including customers, investors and analysts, general consumers, and employees—the company comprehensively reviewed its materiality. Since then, it has emphasized five key areas: 'Realization of a Sustainable Global Environment,' 'Creation of a Safe, Secure, and Comfortable Society,' 'Respect for All People,' 'Continuous Strengthening of Corporate Governance and Compliance,' and 'Fostering a Corporate Culture Oriented toward Sustainability,' leading up to the current revision.
This latest revision was conducted based on sustainability guidelines and in accordance with the principle of double materiality (Note 3), reflecting the progress of the company's management strategy, changing social and environmental contexts, and the establishment of 'Our Philosophy' (Note 2).
