Miura Industry Co., Ltd., an industrial boiler manufacturer, and Tohoku University have established the 'Miura Industry x Tohoku University Heat, Water, and Environment Co-creation Institute' on June 1, 2026, aimed at creating new value in the fields of heat, water, and the environment.

At this institute, industry and academia will work together from the conception and exploration stages of research themes. By connecting the explicit and latent challenges faced in industrial sites with the diverse research seeds possessed by Tohoku University, the institute aims to generate highly accurate research themes focused on social implementation.

Background and Purpose of Establishment To achieve a decarbonized society and sustainable industrial activities, the challenges faced by the industrial sector—such as advanced energy utilization, ensuring safe and stable water resources, and reducing environmental impact—are becoming more complex year by year. While Miura Industry has provided products and services related to the entire factory environment in terms of heat, water, and the environment, focusing on boilers and water treatment, the company believes that creating new value beyond the extension of existing technologies is necessary to address these societal issues. This institute aims to merge Miura Industry's field-based insights and know-how with Tohoku University's advanced research results to create research themes that contribute to future commercialization and product development, subsequently developing them into joint research projects.

Overview of the Co-creation Institute Name: Miura Industry x Tohoku University 'Heat, Water, and Environment' Co-creation Institute Activities: Finding research partners by connecting Miura Industry's needs with Tohoku University's research seeds, identifying necessary functions and technologies, and extracting specific solutions for bottleneck challenges. Through these efforts, the institute will promote the transition from feasibility verification to joint research. Key Research Areas: 1. Heat and Energy 2. Water and Environment 3. Information and Automation Technology Management Structure: General Supervisor: Masaki Takai, Specially Appointed Professor (R&D Division, Miura Industry) Management Support Supervisor: Koji Adachi, Professor (Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University) Location: Comprehensive Research Building, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University Duration: June 2026 – May 2029 Future Prospects: The institute plans to develop joint research projects in stages, starting from theme creation and moving through feasibility verification. Prototypes and core technologies obtained through these joint projects will be linked to social implementation as differentiated proprietary technologies and products, through collaboration between Miura Industry's relevant business units and Tohoku University. Additionally, the institute will contribute to training the next generation of engineers and researchers by facilitating continuous interaction between university faculty, researchers, and company professionals.
