A Unique Expression of Climat Pursued by the 'Master of the North'
Vie di Romans is one of the leading producers in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. Owner and winemaker Gianfranco Gallo emphasizes "people, climate, grape variety, and land" as elements constituting terroir, with a philosophy of harvesting the most suitable grapes for the land at the optimal time.
It is Vie di Romans that, after years of planning, created the "Clima" series. While "Cru" refers to an artificial plot defined by humans, "Clima" is a plot that focuses on differences in natural conditions such as soil and climate. By bottling the six plots where Chardonnay is cultivated individually and subjecting them to the same winemaking process, the individuality of each clima is expressed more purely.
'Grecié,' a Single Plot Selected in the Excellent Year 2020
2020 was a vintage where grapes matured with overall balance, without experiencing extreme weather. Although the number of bunches was reduced due to dryness in the early season, flowering proceeded smoothly with rainfall and temperature changes in June, followed by a mild summer, resulting in the harvest of grapes with an excellent balance of organic acids and sugar.
On the other hand, the plots that could clearly express the "original individuality and quality of each clima" sought by Vie di Romans were limited. Therefore, in the 2020 vintage, only cuvées that met the producer's strict quality standards were carefully selected and released. The "Grecié" that arrived this time is truly a "chosen bottle," where the potential of an excellent year and the individuality of a single clima overlap.
Dense Chardonnay Born from Soil Rich in Dolomite
The plot where "Grecié" is produced is characterized by deep soil mainly composed of clay and silt, rich in dolomite. The complex soil structure, with little limestone in the topsoil and abundant amounts in the deepest layers, brings rich depth and three-dimensionality to the Chardonnay.
Production volume is only 2,660 bottles. Of these, only 150 bottles are imported to Japan. This is a rare cuvée that allows you to enjoy the precision, body, minerality of Friulian white wines, and the complexity born from long-term aging.
