MTG Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya, Aichi; President: Tsuyoshi Matsushita) co-hosted the luncheon seminar "Case Studies on SIXPAD Utilization for Elderly and Diabetic Patients" on May 22, 2026. The event was held in conjunction with the 69th Annual Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society and the 18th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD2026).
The seminar highlighted insights from clinical practice regarding challenges in diabetes and geriatric medicine, exploring the potential of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) as a non-traditional therapeutic approach.
01. Seminar: Efficacy of Lower Limb EMS on Vascular Arteriosclerosis in the Elderly Speaker: Dr. Mototsugu Nishii (Vice Director, Nishii Clinic; Visiting Lecturer, Yokohama City University)
While physical activity is crucial for elderly health, maintaining exercise habits is often difficult due to pain, fatigue, and psychological resistance. Dr. Nishii focused on EMS as an accessible home-based solution that can be performed while seated. - Study 1: A prospective study of adults over 65 (walking speed < 1.0 m/sec) showed that 12 weeks of EMS habituation significantly improved walking speed and gait characteristics compared to a control group. - Study 2: Research on vascular aging showed that 6 months of calf muscle stimulation led to a 4% improvement in the Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI), a marker for arterial stiffness and cardiovascular risk.
02. Seminar: Potential of EMS in Blood Glucose Management for Diabetes Speaker: Dr. Nobuhiko Wada (Head of Diabetes Center, Kurume University Hospital)
Despite the importance of exercise in Type 2 diabetes treatment, only about half of patients maintain regular physical activity. Dr. Wada investigated whether consumer EMS devices could bridge this gap. - Research: Diabetic patients used EMS for 15 minutes daily, 30 minutes after breakfast. Using the FreeStyle Libre 2 for monitoring, the study found that average daily blood glucose significantly improved from 123.3±15.2 mg/dL to 118.6±13.5 mg/dL in 8 out of 12 cases. - Conclusion: EMS shows promise as a substitute or adjunctive method for exercise therapy in diabetes management.
