The Japan Nature Conservation Society (hereinafter, NACS-J) and Sony Corporation (hereinafter, Sony) have signed a partnership agreement (hereinafter, this agreement) through 2030, aiming to promote initiatives toward achieving Nature Positive.

Under this agreement, the two organizations will reorganize their past collaborative efforts under the concept of Nature Positive and aim to develop more effective and impactful initiatives based on the 'Landscape Approach*1'.

*1: The Landscape Approach refers to a framework that treats a defined geographical area—such as a municipality—as an integrated unit for biodiversity conservation and restoration.

[Background]

Biodiversity loss is recognized as one of the fastest-worsening risks over the next decade. However, biodiversity varies significantly by region, and conservation challenges and priority actions differ accordingly. Therefore, achieving 'Nature Positive'—halting biodiversity loss and transitioning toward recovery—requires region-specific initiatives that reflect local characteristics.

Realizing Nature Positive demands collaboration among diverse stakeholders who can address regional challenges by leveraging their respective strengths. Through such cooperation, sustained and locally rooted biodiversity conservation and restoration are expected.

For over 10 years, NACS-J and Sony have jointly advanced the 'Wao! Wao! Biodiversity Project*2' under the key message: 'Noticing leads to protecting.' This project aims to mainstream biodiversity by organizing unique, sensory-rich nature observation events and the 'Wao! Living Things Photo Contest,' which shares感动 experiences with nature. To date, 113 nature observation events and 11 photo contests have been held, engaging over 32,000 participants.

Additionally, Sony has been promoting biodiversity conservation and restoration activities tailored to local ecosystems at its business sites, considering its relationship with natural capital (dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities). This agreement will further enhance these efforts through collaboration with NACS-J, leveraging its specialized expertise to accelerate Nature Positive initiatives in synergy with local communities.

*2: The 'Wao! Wao! Biodiversity Project' was jointly launched by NACS-J and Sony in 2015, based on the belief that protecting biodiversity requires more people to fall in love with nature. Through 'experiences' such as nature observation and conservation activities, and 'sharing' discoveries and感动 via photo contests and Facebook, the project communicates the wonder and importance of nature from two perspectives. https://www.sony.com/ja/SonyInfo/csr/eco/spotlight/waowao/

[Overview and Future Initiatives]

Moving forward, while continuing to deliver nature experience programs, the focus will shift more strongly toward 'protection.' Specifically, the following initiatives will be advanced, with consideration for natural capital disclosure (TNFD):

- Biodiversity conservation and restoration activities at the regional level - Awareness-raising activities such as nature experience programs under the 'Wao! Wao! Biodiversity Project' - Information sharing and dialogue on biodiversity, natural capital, and Nature Positive - Disclosure of information related to natural capital

Through this agreement, NACS-J and Sony aim to create model cases for achieving Nature Positive at the regional level. They also seek to generate social value by expanding access to nature experiences and further developing educational outreach.

[Identification of Key Areas]

As one of the activities under the agreement, NACS-J and Sony have initiated Nature Positive efforts in 'Inazawa City' and 'Saku City,' areas closely linked to Sony, with a municipal-level foundation. As a first step, they have identified key areas critical for biodiversity conservation in both regions. Through interviews with local nature experts, 21 key areas were identified in Inazawa City and 49 in Saku City.

Going forward, based on these identified key areas, the two organizations will collaborate with local municipalities and community groups to develop and implement conservation and restoration plans aimed at achieving Nature Positive in these regions.

We view this partnership as a significant step forward, building on the long-standing initiatives of both organizations. By leveraging insights and experiences gained through Sony's proactive efforts and deepening dialogue and collaboration with NACS-J, local communities, and municipalities, we aim to create sustainable initiatives that respect each region's unique characteristics and natural value. We will continue working through collaboration with diverse stakeholders to achieve Nature Positive.

Toshiyuki Tsuchiya, Chairman, The Japan Nature Conservation Society

For 10 years, we have walked side by side with Sony, delivering nature experience programs to nurture the next generation's appreciation of nature. We are deeply moved and proud to have shared our foundational practice—'nature observation using all five senses'—with so many people and helped cultivate a heart that values nature. Now, building on a decade of achievements, we are taking a bold step toward Nature Positive initiatives with a conscious focus on 'landscape.' This initiative represents a crucial challenge in realizing our strategic framework, the 'Japan-style Nature Positive Approach,' a core mission through 2030. Building on the strong trust forged through years of educational collaboration, we will work toward a future where nature and people coexist harmoniously.
