According to a recent World Bank report, countries worldwide raised $107 billion (approx. 3.4 trillion TWD) last year through carbon emission fees, a 2% increase from 2024. To achieve climate goals, more countries are implementing the 'polluter pays principle' through carbon taxes or emissions trading systems (ETS). The '2026 State and Trends of Carbon Pricing' report, released on May 20, notes that with about 87 related policies currently in place, nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions are covered by direct carbon pricing mechanisms. Countries including India, Japan, and Vietnam have implemented new systems, and the global average carbon price has doubled from $10 per ton in 2016 to nearly $21 in 2026.
