According to Reuters, U.S. President Trump stated on the 8th (Wednesday) during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy that the United States will authorize Ukraine to domestically produce 'Patriot' air defense system interceptor missiles to meet Ukraine's defense needs.

Trump told Zelenskyy: 'We will give you permission to produce Patriots. That's pretty cool—now you can't complain that we're giving you too little. This is a defensive weapon, and I prefer defensive weapons over offensive ones.'

Trump did not disclose further details, nor did he specify whether the interceptor missiles would be manufactured within Ukraine or in another country.

When asked whether the U.S. would soon provide additional 'Patriot' interceptor missiles to Ukraine, Trump said he believes Ukraine is capable of rapidly initiating production, and therefore the U.S. will provide 'a portion' of interceptor missiles.

Trump said: 'We have Patriots, but not many. We need these weapons ourselves. I think they can start production quickly. Once we explain the situation, we will bring in companies. You will work with them—they have strong production capabilities, even for highly complex weapons.'

Trump hinted that the U.S. might pressure the contractors manufacturing the 'Patriot' interceptors to increase production output.

'We have significant influence over the companies that make Patriots. We haven't notified them yet, but that's not an issue. I believe they will be happy to comply,' Trump said.

Reuters noted that the 'Patriot' air defense system has become Ukraine's primary means of countering Russian aerial strikes and is the only weapon Ukraine possesses capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on the U.S. to provide more interceptor missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

However, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul stated that while allowing Ukraine to produce 'Patriot' interceptors marks a major advancement in U.S.-Ukraine cooperation, it does not address Ukraine's immediate needs. He said: 'Ukraine needs interceptors now—they cannot wait for future production.'

The New York Times also argued that even if Ukraine obtains the necessary authorization, production will take time. Manufacturing 'Patriot' interceptor missiles is complex and time-consuming. It remains unclear which Ukrainian company will partner with Raytheon Technologies or Lockheed Martin to produce the missiles. Trump's policy may take years to yield tangible results.
