With AI computing demand continuing to rise and traditional organic substrates nearing their physical limits, glass substrates—prized for their superior mechanical, thermal, and optical properties—are being hailed by the advanced packaging industry as a 'game changer.' Glass substrates are now transitioning from the lab to production lines, ushering in a new generation of advanced packaging.

2026 is widely recognized as the inaugural year for glass substrate commercialization. Intel is taking an early lead, investing over $1 billion at its Chandler, Arizona campus to establish dedicated R&D and pilot production lines for glass substrates. The company also plans to transform its Rio Rancho, New Mexico facility into the world’s first mass production site for glass substrates.

In January this year, Intel officially announced that its glass substrate technology has entered mass production. The industry’s first server processor featuring a glass core substrate, the Xeon 6+ 'Clearwater Forest,' has already launched, becoming the first product to achieve commercial deployment of glass substrates.

Compared to traditional organic substrates, glass substrates can increase chip interconnect density by 10 times. Their coefficient of thermal expansion closely matches that of silicon chips, reducing warpage under high temperatures by over 70% compared to organic substrates. This enables single-package integration of up to one trillion transistors, positioning glass substrates as a critical pathway for extending Moore’s Law.

Market research firms estimate that the global glass substrate market will reach approximately $18.6 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5% from 2026 to 2030.

Intel’s leadership has triggered a global response. TSMC plans to launch its CoPoS pilot line in 2026, Samsung Electro-Mechanics aims for mass production of large-size glass substrates by 2027, and SK Hynix, through its subsidiary Absolics, is investing $300 million in the U.S. to build a dedicated production line.
