Officials at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida announced on Thursday, the 9th, that the airport will officially be renamed the Donald J. Trump Presidential International Airport, marking the first time in U.S. history that an airport has been named after a sitting president.
According to NBC, the renaming stems from a bill signed in March by Florida Governor DeSantis, which mandates the airport's name change.
The airport's website indicates that the renaming will cost at least $5.5 million, with signage, branding, and other materials to be updated over the coming weeks. Airport personnel stated that while the name has officially changed, the airport code will remain PBI until August 18, when it will be changed to DJT.
Trump posted on social media Thursday evening, calling it "a very important day for Palm Beach, Florida," and said the airport "will soon become one of the greatest and most spectacular airports in the world!"
Trump's son, Eric Trump, also posted on social media, stating that Trump One, the private jet used by Trump during his campaign, was the first aircraft to land after the renaming.
Earlier that day, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent spoke at a dedication ceremony in Tennessee. Last year, the state legislature passed a law to rename several bridges and roads, including renaming a major bridge in Jefferson County to the "Donald J. Trump Presidential Bridge."
The move reflects a growing trend of honoring political figures through infrastructure naming, particularly in states with strong partisan alignment. While such renaming often sparks debate over the politicization of public assets, supporters argue it celebrates leadership and national pride. The DJT airport code, coinciding with Trump's initials, has also drawn attention as a symbolic branding decision.
The renaming process includes updating all digital platforms, airport maps, flight information systems, and physical signage. International airlines operating at the airport will be required to reflect the new name in their systems, potentially affecting global flight databases.
No federal approval was required for the name change, as the airport is locally operated and funded primarily through user fees and local taxes. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will need to update its records and navigation systems accordingly.
Critics have questioned the $5.5 million cost during a time of budget constraints, while proponents highlight the potential for increased tourism and global recognition.
The airport, located in West Palm Beach, serves over 8 million passengers annually and is a key gateway for private and international flights, particularly for wealthy visitors and political figures.
The decision aligns with Florida’s broader efforts to assert cultural and political identity, especially under Governor DeSantis’s administration. It also underscores the deepening integration of political branding into public infrastructure.
As the first airport in the U.S. to bear a sitting president’s name, the change sets a precedent that could influence future naming policies at federal, state, and local levels.
The Trump family has long maintained a residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, making the area a frequent destination for the former president and a symbolic center of his political base.
With the renaming, the airport not only honors Trump but also reinforces the region’s association with his legacy and movement.
The full rebranding campaign is expected to be completed by late fall, including new uniforms for staff, updated websites, and promotional materials featuring the DJT moniker.
Public reaction has been polarized, reflecting the nation’s broader political divide. Supporters celebrate it as a tribute to leadership, while opponents view it as an inappropriate elevation of a controversial figure.
Nonetheless, the change is now official, and the world will soon see flight schedules and travel apps displaying the name Donald J. Trump Presidential International Airport.
