Taiwan's retail investors rapidly reduced leveraged stock holdings last Friday (17th), the fastest pace since April 2025, further pushing the Taiwan stock market into a technical correction phase.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg, margin debt used for stock purchases declined by nearly NT$27.6 billion (approximately USD 896 million) in a single day—the largest daily drop since market sell-offs triggered by former U.S. President Trump's so-called 'Liberation Day' tariff measures last year.

Margin debt has now fallen 7% from its all-time high, dropping to USD 18.2 billion.

This retreat in margin borrowing reflects cooling risk appetite among retail investors, who have been the primary buyers during market dips in Taiwan—one of the world's best-performing equity markets this year.

However, following concerns over excessive capital spending and weakening profit outlooks sparked by TSMC's (2330-TW) latest earnings report, the Taiwan Weighted Index (TAIEX) has declined more than 10% from its June peak.
