Samsung announced on Tuesday (21st) that it will establish a robotics business unit that reports directly to the CEO, aiming to accelerate technological development and commercialization in the field and position robotics as a new growth engine. Following this announcement, Samsung Electronics' stock price rose more than 5% during Tuesday's trading session.
In a statement, Samsung said the newly established RX (Robotics eXperience) division will be responsible for formulating mid-to-long-term robotics strategies, core technology R&D, and business execution, while also expanding research capabilities both domestically in Korea and internationally.
The division will be led by Executive Vice President Lee Dongkun, who will head the strategic team. Lee previously led robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group and directed the development roadmap at Boston Dynamics.
Samsung also revealed plans to establish robotics R&D hubs in the United States, China, and Japan—countries where robotics technology is rapidly advancing. By leveraging local industrial ecosystems and specialized expertise, Samsung aims to comprehensively strengthen its market competitiveness.
This move is based on a broader robotics development blueprint. At its January investor briefing, Samsung stated its goal to achieve 'concrete' results in humanoid robotics by the end of this year.
In April, Samsung indicated it would evaluate potential investments and acquisitions based on demand to further accelerate robotics development and commercialization, while also collaborating with local enterprises to co-develop technologies.
Samsung also noted that breakthroughs in technologies such as embodied AI are significantly enhancing the feasibility of robotics businesses. The company plans to develop humanoid robots to improve productivity and user experience, initially deploying them in manufacturing facilities before gradually expanding into home and retail environments.
