The launch of Kimi K3 by Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has triggered market tremors, evoking memories of last year’s DeepSeek moment. However, Bloomberg analysis indicates that SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, and other memory chip manufacturers could emerge as primary beneficiaries due to the model’s enormous memory requirements.

Moonshot AI claims Kimi K3’s performance rivals top-tier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, while its usage cost is only a fraction of theirs. Kimi K3 is reportedly equipped with 2.8 trillion parameters and a context window capable of handling 1 million tokens.

Bloomberg notes that such specifications demand significantly more memory than previous-generation models, suggesting that even as AI models continue toward lower costs and open-source development, memory demand could still rise. With the global memory market dominated by a few suppliers, SK Hynix (SKHY-US) and Samsung Electronics (005930-KS) are poised to hold relatively advantageous positions.

Stanley Tang, Senior Portfolio Manager at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management, said the limited number of memory suppliers places memory manufacturers in the best position among semiconductor stocks. If models like Kimi gain wider adoption, overall AI demand is unlikely to decline; instead, broader applications could accelerate the penetration of agent-style AI.

The benefits extend beyond the memory sector. Gary Tan, Portfolio Manager at Allspring Global Investments, believes the AI infrastructure layer will remain the biggest winner. China’s push for open-source AI will require more computing resources, simultaneously boosting demand for networking equipment, memory, and other underlying hardware.

In contrast, high-end chip designers and AI model developers face more complex impacts. As low-cost models continue to improve in performance, the premium pricing enjoyed by NVIDIA (NVDA-US) and AMD (AMD-US) due to the scarcity of high-end chips is once again being questioned by the market.

Competition in the AI model market is intensifying. Following Kimi K3’s release, Alibaba (BABA-US, 9988-HK) and MiniMax have also launched new models, signaling that Chinese AI firms are accelerating their race for the open-source model market.
