Former U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday (23rd) that if Yemen's Houthi rebels launch another attack on commercial ships in the Red Sea, the United States will hold Iran accountable and carry out significant military retaliation against both Iran and the Houthi movement.
Trump made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that the U.S. had previously launched a strong military strike against the Houthis a year ago in response to their attacks on ships and disruption of commerce and trade. Since then, despite periods of heightened U.S.-Iran tensions, the Houthis had largely refrained from attacks—until now, when they have resumed targeting vessels.
The Houthi movement claimed on Wednesday evening to have launched missile and drone attacks on two Saudi oil tankers transiting the Red Sea. This action could further disrupt vital energy shipments, potentially expanding the U.S.-Iran conflict into Red Sea shipping lanes and intensifying market concerns over oil supply disruptions.
Trump stated that this post should be seen as an official warning: if the Houthis carry out similar attacks again, the U.S. will hold Iran responsible, as the Houthis are considered Iranian proxies. In such a case, both Iran and the Houthi movement would face "major military consequences."
Trump expressed disappointment that the Houthis had resumed attacks, noting they had previously acted in a relatively "professional and smart" manner. However, he did not specify what exact military actions the U.S. might take or the criteria for determining Iran's direct involvement.
Based in Yemen and long supported by Iran, the Houthi movement's latest attacks on Saudi oil tankers heighten risks to Red Sea shipping and energy supplies, and could further escalate the already tense U.S.-Iran conflict.
